The Effect of Climate Change and Resiliency of Filipinos

Climate change is a tough reality for many Filipinos, and it's not just a distant problem, it's happening frequently. The country's location makes it a natural target for environmental disasters. It sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. It's also in the typhoon belt, which means it gets hit by about 20 storms every year. Lately, these threats have become much more dangerous. The planet's changing climate has made typhoons stronger and more frequent, bringing devastating floods and landslides. These storms don't just damage homes and roads, they wipe out entire communities and destroy the crops that many families depend on. This puts their food and livelihoods at risk. On top of the storms, the seas are rising faster around the Philippines than in many other parts of the world. This is a huge problem for coastal towns, where many people live. Rising sea levels could eventually swallow homes and land, forcing people to move. The saltwater is also contaminating the freshwater they need to drink and the soil they use to farm. It's a domino effect, and it’s a constant struggle to keep up with these changes.

One of the most significant impacts is the increased intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, particularly typhoons and heavy rainfall. While the Philippines is accustomed to an average of 20 typhoons annually, climate change has led to stronger, more destructive storms, causing widespread flooding and landslides.  These events devastate coastal communities and agricultural lands, destroying homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. The progressive changes in rainfall patterns also contribute to both drought and excessive rainfall in different parts of the country, crippling the agriculture sector which many Filipinos depend on for their living. The resulting crop failures and livestock losses lead to food insecurity and economic hardship for millions, especially those in rural areas.

Another critical factor is the accelerated sea level rise, which disproportionately affects the Philippines due to its vast coastline and high population density in coastal areas. Sea levels around the country are rising at a rate significantly higher than the global average. This progressive change threatens to submerge low-lying communities, leading to the displacement of millions of people and causing saltwater intrusion that contaminates freshwater sources and agricultural lands. The warming oceans also lead to coral bleaching, endangering the country's rich marine biodiversity, which is vital for the fishing industry and the livelihoods of countless fisherfolk. The disruption of these fragile marine ecosystems poses a direct threat to the country's food security and economy.

Unite, Compete, and Triumph: That's the Intrams Spirit!

Unite, Compete, and Triumph: That's the Intrams Spirit!

September 4 to the 6th, was 3 whole days of constant thrill. It was days of experiencing different kinds of sports. It was a time when the entire school transformed into a vibrant arena of sportsmanship, with each department proudly representing its colors. Every place i went was an atmosphere of electricity, filled with the loud cheers of supporters and the spirited energy of the athletes and supporters. Beyond the thrill of the win or the sting of a loss, what stood out most was the sense of unity.

At the first day of intramurals, me and my friends went to see a match in Sepak. Interesting fact about Sepak or Sipa is that it is considered to be one of the hardest sports in the Philippines. That's why when watching i thought of how incredible this players are in competing in this kind of sport since it is a very hard sport.

Next, we went to watch basketball. The gym was filled with athletes, so we didn't really went inside at that time, but based on my observations, basketball was one of the most hype sports of all time. In the afternoon, we went to watch out colleagues at the dance sport competition. It was very fun despite staying in the gym for 3 hours doing nothing but it was thrilling, since i got to witnessed smooth dancers like kuya John Paul and the others. But the main reason we went there was to support our colleagues, Aleina & Emman. Unfortunately, they didn't won any awards but they did try their best.

September 5, 2025. Second day of Intramurals. In this day, i went to see alot of sports, since teachers at the time didn't come to see us but advice us to support our athletes. At morning, we went to watch another basketball game since Johvan insisted on going because his brother was gonna play.

By Afternoon, 2:30 PM, we went to watch the boxing match of our seniors. This is the one that made me excited the most since it was the sport for physical and intellectual ability. Every match was fierced, exchanging blows after blows. Unfortunately, the majority of the matches lasted only 2 or 3 rounds minimum. After the boxing matches, we went to alot more places but unfortunately i wasn't able to take pictures.

At the 3rd day, September 6. It was recognition day so i didn't really get to watch any sports. But i think mostly it was the results of the games so it's okay. I really enjoyed this past 3 days of Intramurals since it mademe feel free from exhaustion from school works, it enlightened my core for sports and more importantly, it refreshed my mind.

Reflection of the First Quarter

 A. What are the learning/discoveries that I have gained?

In the first quarter, I learned a lot in managing my time due to a lot of homework, projects, and extracurriculars was tough because i was part of the students who had a mindset of "due to tomorrow, do tomorrow" but I discovered that using a planner and setting specific times for each task really helped or doing the given work after just gave it to you can really be helpful too. I also realized how important it is to ask questions in class. It's not about looking smart; it's about understanding the material. My teachers were really helpful when I asked for clarification on things I didn't get. Moreover, i discovered that unlike in the past school years, written works was not the key to getting honors but performances, specifically: recitation, participation, behavior etc.

B. What are the problems/challenges that I have encountered?

One of the biggest problems was procrastination. I kept putting off big assignments until the last minute, which meant I was always stressed and the quality of my work wasn't the best. Not to mention, there were a lot of test every other day. Another challenge was staying focused. It's easy to get distracted by my phone or social media when I'm trying to study, due to friends and family approaching me either to go out or play online games, which it really cut into my study time.

C. How did I address these challenges?

To fight the problems, I started using the Pomodoro Technique, which includes studying in short, focused bursts with small breaks in between. It helped me stay on task without getting overwhelmed. I also made a rule to put my phone in a different area when I'm studying. This simple step made a huge difference in my ability to concentrate. An example is one of our major subject which is Basic Electronics, In the last lesson i didn't really understand the lesson which i started watching tutorial videos online and joined a study group with some friends. Explaining concepts to each other made everything click a lot better. This way of approach enhanced my way of concentration and memory skill, which eventually helped me in the exams.

D. Moving on, I will….

Moving on, I will stick to my study schedule and not let myself fall behind and may be when things start to get hard again, i'll find away to modify my study schedule/method. I want to continue working on my focus and will try to be more proactive in class. I also plan to start the school works given as soon as they're assigned, so I can do my best work without the last-minute stress. My goal is to finish the school year, trying my best and with the honor role

Nutrition Month Experience

MY NUTRITION MONTH EXPERIENCE

My experience during Nutrition Month was special. It was both educational and inspiring, leaving a lasting impression on my understanding of food and wellness. The school's activities were well-planned, and engaging. Each of the food stalls, it was such a one of a kind experience since I got to taste different kinds of foods from different grade levels. My favorite was the chicken pastel. Apart from that, I also participated in a poster-making contest. But, due to the sudden request to join in the poster making by Sir Renante, I did not able to get properly prepared leading to my lose. Moreover, I supported my friends in the Nutri-jingle event since it was regional, and they needed all the support they needed. Fortunately, they won a trophy.

My experience during Nutrition Month has changed my perspective on food. It is no longer just about satisfying hunger but about nourishing my body and mind. The knowledge I gained has motivated me to make more informed choices, and the sense of community fostered during the event has made me realize that in achieving a healthy lifestyle, being alone is not an option. In conclusion, I now understand that taking care of one's health, starting with what we eat with some pals, is a valuable investment for our future.

                                                                 CONGRATS MAXWELL.

Letter for the President

 Dear Mr. President,

I hope this letter finds you well as I write this letter not to complain for negative message but to address certain issues. Specifically, the nation now faces the perennial and devastating threat of flooding. This issue is not only merely a natural phenomenon, it is a MAJOR impediment/problem as our country's progress and a source of economic distress. Our past leaders have been lax, hesitant, and conservative on this issue. I have once again highlighted the inadequacy of our present flood control measures and the urgent need for a more comprehensive and proactive approach.

The concerns I wish to address are multi-faceted and require your decisive leadership now. We must have a broad, forward-looking vision and sufficient funds as we start control systems including dams, protective barriers, and storage reservoirs. The flooding problem is no longer offensive. Second, widespread deforestation and environmental degradation. Some officials have been clearing the trees which have

contributed to mudslides and are causing the floods. Illegal settlements in high-risk areas are significant numbers of our fellow citizens in informal settlements located in flood-prone areas. These communities are the most vulnerable and have been the brunt of the devastation.

Mr. President, the Filipino people look to you for strong leadership in this critical time. I appeal to you to declare flood control and climate change adaptation as a national priority. Let us move beyond temporary relief operations and invest in a future where our community are more resilient and prepared to face the challenge of a changing climate. Thank you for your time and consideration.

 Respectfully, Nash Angelo Gorospe

 A concerned Citizen/ Student.
